Your alternator turns mechanical energy into electricity, charging your battery and running your vehicle's electrical systems. For example, it powers your steering, car entertainment system, dashboard displays, windows, windshield wipers. It also helps warm heated seats.

The process starts with your engine driving a belt. The belt drives a pulley, which turns a rotor shaft, which turns magnetic coils. The coil movement generates AC power, which a rectifier captures and converts to DC power. Your vehicle can then start and stay running.
