Mopar Lighting
Types of Automotive Lighting
Your vehicle has OEM lights for just about every use. Some, like your headlights, taillights, and daytime running lights (or DRLs), you get right from the factory.
- A headlight has both high-beam and low-beam settings. High beams are for when it's extremely dark, while low beams are for everyday driving. Tail lights indicate your position both on the road and off, as do DRLs.
- Any headlamp, like any tail lamp, also functions as a hazard light; put them all together, and you get "flashers," which tell other drivers there's danger nearby or that you're in distress and need help.
You've also got both signal lights ("blinkers," for short) to indicate you're changing lanes or turning, and brake lights, which show you're slowing down or stopping.
You may even have other types of lighting, too.
- Fog lights, for example, are low-glare and shine brightly and low for better visibility in bad weather.
- Puddle lights, on the other hand, illuminate the area below your vehicle doors, so that you and your passengers can steer clear of rainwater and other obstacles as you get in and out.
- You may even have specialty lights. They showcase license plate frames and other exterior accessories.
Types of Car Light Bulbs
Most are either:
- High-intensity discharge (HID, for short; also called Xenon)
- Halogen, or
- LED
What lighting your vehicle needs depends on its make, model, and body style, so consult your owner's manual for the best answer.
When Do You Change a Car Light Bulb?
That depends on what kind of lights your vehicle has.
- Change Xenon/HID lights every few years, or if they dim.
- Change halogen lights every couple years or so.
- Change LED lights if either their electronics die or the lights themselves burn out.
