Mopar Radiator Cooling Parts
When your engine runs, it puts out heat, and a lot of it. Too much, and it can overheat and stop working. Coolant (also called antifreeze) absorbs most of the heat, but it's your radiator that has to dissipate it.
How Do Radiators Work?
In stages. First, coolant flows through your radiator hoses -- through inlet hoses and outlet hoses, specifically. It gets pressurized by your radiator cap as it moves. This helps the coolant accumulate as much heat as possible. Flat, fin-style aluminum tubes then release the heat, and a fan disperses it into the air nearby.
Some radiators have extra fins. They're called turbulators. They get rid of engine heat even better. If your radiator has tanks mounted on its sides, though, they're transmission coolers. These transfer the excess heat from your transmission to the coolant instead of scattering it into the air. This helps your transmission work as well as it can.
Unfortunately, radiators can develop problems. Luckily, there are signs of them that you can look for.
What are the Signs My Radiator is Failing or Has Gone Bad?
- Unusual engine noises
- The sweet, syrupy odor of ethylene glycol
- Coolant discoloration
- Sludgy coolant
- Antifreeze leaks
- High temperature-gauge readings
- Heater and air conditioning malfunctions
If you're having trouble shifting, however, it's a symptom of a bad transmission cooler.
